No one could guess what the stories meant to Janice, and why they meant enough to her that she had reread them several times. They meant so much that they were the few personal things sheâd managed to hang on to all these years. Janice pulled out the chair and sat to read Carrieâs notes.

My mom prefers dramatic novels where the man dies in the end, is abusive, or is too selfish to stick around, allowing the heroine to burn a glorious trail of purpose via martyrdom. In some cases, the women are strong, such as Scarlett in Gone with the Wind, who goes after what she wants, regardless of how she might hurt othersâI definitely see this selfishness in my mother . . .
