And what business was it of Carrie’s? What was she doing going through her books anyway?

Especially her Jane Eyre. The urge to run down the hall and make sure the book was safe and sound almost overrode her curiosity.

She pulled out a scholarship essay form that read: Review your parents’ bookshelf. Identify a common theme of the books there. In one thousand words or less, demonstrate how this theme is, or is not, reflected in your life.

Ah-ha. This should be good.

No one could guess what the stories meant to Janice, and why they meant enough to her that she had reread them several times. They meant so much that they were the few personal things she’d managed to hang on to all these years. Janice pulled out the chair and sat to read Carrie’s notes.

My mom is obsessed with female protagonists who are victims of circumstance, and their choices. My mom prefers dramatic novels where the man dies in the end, is abusive, or is too selfish to stick around, allowing the heroine to burn a glorious trail of purpose via martyrdom. In some cases, the women are strong, such as Scarlett in Gone with the Wind, who goes after what she wants, regardless of how she might hurt others—I definitely see this selfishness in my mother . . .
